Weather Channel Tour Blog 18

Comparing the Times tour to the Weather Channel tour are kind of hard because they were completely different from each other. The Times tour told you the intricate details of the outside and focused only on the outside of the building. The Weather Channel tour was completely different because it showed pictures starting from dirt to the finished building. I think the inside of the Weather Channel building is just so moderately designed. It has bright colors and lights and shows you that we are making our way through technology.

Times Tour NYC Blog #17

Although I have never been to NYC I have always thought that the buildings I have seen in pictures are beautiful. I am not a big city person but I do have a love for good architecture. The Times building is very tall and has interesting features. Although I do love the beams on the outside of the windows to reduce sunlight and create privacy, I do not think it looks good from the street view. But hey you win some and you lose some. I also think the beams along the sides could have some color to them because the building is just a little dole. But, overall I think the structure was put together great.

Recording Studio Tour Blog #16

Being able to view the Recording studios online was pretty neat to be honest. I have seen studios in person before because I had an advertisement internship in high school. I got to be a part of a music video and got to see all the behind the scenes and help out. It was a really neat experience. Seeing other studios online makes me want to go farther and get my own big studio for advertisement photography.

State of the Media Blog 15

Looking at the statistics of media and how it has changed over the last few years is quite interesting. I looked at the newspaper stats and to be honest it did not surprise me that it has had such a decline since 2009. It does not surprise me much because so many people get news updates to their phone or computer and can even look at the newspaper online. Looking at the stats for the News does not surprise me though. I figured that morning news was the least viewed while late news was the more popular news. Simply because people have more time for it in the evening. It does surprise me just a little bit that it has had a decline in the past years but I do not think it will ever go fully away.

Ethics Blog 14

I am the type of person who stands up for people no matter their background. I cannot stand when people discriminate others based on the color of their skin. I think I have a strong voice for it because I have been looked down upon many times in the past three years because my boyfriend is black. After reading the diversity section of the site I just wanted to read more. But, there was one line that really stuck out to me when reading, "While lessons can be learned from mistakes, we learn even better from success." I believe we learn from mistakes, such as discriminating someone based on the color of their skin, their religion or just because of their gender. But, I think we learn even better from successfully not discriminating. Just stepping right over that mistake and taking it to the next level to learn. Ones personality and knowledge just expands so much more by involving themselves with all different types of ethnicities.

Internet Safety

Internet safety is a big deal to me because I know there are a lot of creepy people out there. It also does not take much technology or research to figure out where someone is when they are on the internet. The safety games that were provided were good for young children. I would not call them games though because it is mostly just asks questions. I think if there was something a little more interactive then the kids would play them more. But, it does provide all the information children need to know about internet safety.

Censoring

There are a lot of things that a person can say that would upset someone. What many stations struggle with is not knowing what will upset who. In my opinion I do not think everything needs to be censored like they are making it. The technology is out there so parents can block certain channels or sites from their kids if they are worried about it. I think it is up to the parents choice what should be censored from their kid and what shouldn't. When I was in junior high I had to get papers signed saying that it was okay for me to watch a PG13 movie. Schools take precaution to not expose children to bad things, so I think the government should trust the parents and the school district that people will not expose kids to things their parents do not approve of.

Green Screen

We all know that technology is coming a long way and can only go further. The green screen that is used in a ton of movies can do some amazing things. You can make it seem as if so many things are actually happening that are not. When the video is taken it is put into an editing software with chroma key. The software will take out everything green and replace it with what you want to place there. You can switch out the green for a different color, you just have to make sure that color is nowhere else in the scene.

The Great Train Robbery Review

I never thought I was the type of person to watch a black and white film with just music and no talking. But, The Great Train Robbery actually held my attention. Maybe it held my attention longer because it was just a 10min film and not a hour film. When the guy was fighting the man with the shovel on the train, I could tell when they switched it to a dummy so that could have been a little better constructed. Also, the gun scene at the end when they were playing with the money was not my favorite. I did not like watching that scene because they were shooting at each other with horses between them. Maybe I did not like it because I am an animal person, but still it was a little sad to watch. I thought the end had a really good twist to it, I completely thought they were different people than who they turned out to be. So, not too bad of a black and white film.

Netflix is on at this moment

I have not heard the name Blockbuster in a really long time until I was asked my opinion for this blog. I grew up in Kansas City so Blockbuster was always right there. My older brother and I would always go there to rent movies, until Redbox came out. Once Redbox came out I would always use that with my friends, then my dad really started to like Netflix. Ever since then we use Netflix about every single day. I live in my sorority house so it is hard to get privacy and just relax with a movie. Since I can never watch it on the T.V. I just watch Netflix on my phone in my bed and it is just as perfect. As I am writing this blog post right now, I am watching Supernatural on Netflix.

Old Time Radio Shows

Old TIme Radio Shows were a great idea at one point. I am a more visual person, so I prefer to see the people who are talking instead of like imagining everything. It was hard for me to follow along sometimes just because of that reason. But, it is family friendly so it was a good alternative because you were not completely cut off from the outside world if you could not afford a television. I also would just prefer the television, it makes it more real. I often find myself not really paying attention to the music that is playing in my car just because I am so focused on what I am seeing. I think it may be the love for photography that brings that out.

Napster or iTunes?

One of the top companies in the nation right now is Apple. Apple is who owns iTunes and with everything new that they come out with I have no doubt that iTunes will be on top for a long time. I use iTunes and have read about using other options, but I never read anything that excited me to try something new. I think I will keep using iTunes for a long time. They have so many music selections and video selections. iTunes is also advancing considering they offer so much more than just music. I think iTunes will stay on top of the ratings for a good amount of time.

The End of Paper

There has been a lot of talk lately about Newspapers ending. I have been asked this in a few different classes and I think I have finally figured out my stand point. We all know the digital age is here and it is only going up from here. Everyone is also worried about books ending since there are so many ways to get it digitally now. I believe that neither the newspaper or books will end for many, many years. I know the digital age will go way up from here but there will always be those little things that people love. How many people actually read the newspaper when it is delivered to them? Majority of them do, but not everyone reads it. It provides people with jobs though right? The newspaper company and the delivery person. I know many people who get the newspaper because they like doing the crossword puzzles that are in them. But, they often do not pay for them, just take them from places that offer them free. But, one reason a lot of people love newspapers is because it provides people with coupons. It is a way to save money and people love that! I know that is the only reason my family in the city and I get the newspaper. My family in the country though always gets the newspaper because it keeps them up to date about everything going on around them. The newspaper will not be completely gone for many years.

Banning Books

When I first heard about many books being banned from schools, I was not thinking exactly what happened. I was thinking maybe violent books got banned from elementary schools or very sexual books got banned from junior high schools. I was completely wrong about what kind of books are banned. I took special interest in the children's books that are banned because I wanted to know what people really had against books for children. A few books that caught my eye was The Lorax, James and the Giant Peach and the famous Harry Potter. I was really taken back by The Lorax being banned. The Lorax is such a happy child book and even as a college student I enjoy The Lorax movie. The famous Harry Potter is banned? Wow, now that is schocking. I know so many people that are obsessed with Harry Potter and I personally do not see anything wrong with it. Witchcraft and Wizardly was a couple of the reasons it was banned. If they are really going to ban these books then they should ban Twilight and The Hunger Games.

Poor Richard's Almanack

"A Lie stands on 1 leg, Truth on 2." This is a quote which stood out to me from Poor Richard's Almanack. I think this stands out to me because in the end, all anybody wants is the truth. It takes someone with a strong back bone to stand up tall and tell the truth about some things. "A Lie stands on 1 leg," makes me think that someone is hiding their other leg. Since they are hiding their other leg, that means they are hiding the truth. That is why I say it takes a strong person to tell the truth all the time. Many quotes in the Almanack got my attention but for some reason this one got my attention the most. I think it caught my attention because I am someone who will always be straight up with someone and it really does annoy me when someone is not up front about something. I am one who likes everyone to be happy and I try to include everyone. I do not like when people keep things from one another. Maybe this was a tangent or something, who knows? It was my reaction to the quote and I thought it would be better to just share my first reaction with you.

Does the internet cause less human interaction?

The internet is a very confusing yet, convenient way of communication. Although the question is whether the internet causes more or less human interaction. If you sit and ponder about the question for a little bit you will realize the answer is yes on both accounts.

Although it causes less interaction face to face being able to touch one another, it does not completely cut it off because of the media available today. You can skype with anyone across the world, you can meet people through social networking and you can work from home. All of things are just luxuries that come with the internet. But, does that cause less interaction face to face? No, because people explore and find new things on the internet. The internet allows people to get jobs, explore the world and meet new people. I do not think the internet will end human interaction.

Jeff Greenfield. Blog #2

This past year in school I have realized that things are evolving a lot quicker than other people realize. I have taken a few classes which we were asked questions about media now days. I do think that all the new electronics are taking over all of the old techniques. Today, my grandparents could tell you about how they use to write letters to their loved ones. The letters showed more affection and was also the best way of communication back then. Whereas the closest we got to send letters to people was when we were little sending out birthday party invitations. We never really wrote letters unless we were really distant from someone who would want to receive a letter. But, that is the stories that our grandparents would tell us and we would be nowhere close to the same communication ways as them. Now days we are always using other things to communicate such as, texting, calling, facebook messaging, twitter and using personal e-mail.

I guess what I am trying to say is that this whole argument does matter but, then again it is just the natural step in life. Our grandparents have stories to tell us and now is our chance to develop our stories to tell to our grandkids when we are older. I bet a long time ago people would complain about others having the next big thing, but nobody noticed they were complaining; because they didn't have anything that would put it publicly to the world with the click of a button. So to sum it up; it does matter, it is just the next step in life, try to remember your values and cherish your memories.

Media Junkie

As much as I would like to say I do not use media very much just like everybody else would, I would be lying if I did that. Once you think about what all is involved in the media category, well there goes most of the things you deal with on a daily basis. I am studying to become a photographer and as you can imagine that means I deal with media every single day. Something that helps me think and get into focus is listening to music. When I listen to music I often listen to it either on my computer, iPod and occasionally my phone. Well on top of that I do check my e-mail and twitter every day.

I may spend a lot of time with media, but that is okay by me because I do not waste my time. I usually am productive with media, searching for coupons or doing something that is affiliated with school. So to truthfully answer the question, I do spend a lot of time with media, but it does not interfere with my life and instead it enhances it.
